The outcome
Create a notebook whose answers are grounded in material you understand and are allowed to use.
NotebookLM is a source-grounded research assistant. Building a focused knowledge space from PDFs, websites, videos, audio, and workspace files, then asking grounded questions or producing cited study and briefing materials. This guide narrows that broad capability into one repeatable outcome, with checkpoints that keep the source material and your judgment in the loop.
Before you begin
Set the boundary before the tool starts.
Choose one real task, identify who will use the result, and decide what evidence or test will make the result acceptable. Gather only the source material needed for that task. If the work contains confidential, personal, regulated, or client-owned information, confirm that the platform and account are approved before sharing it.
AI should make the work easier to inspect. If the workflow removes the source, the owner, or the review step, redesign the workflow.
Step by step
A workflow you can repeat.
- 01
Define one project question and create a separate notebook for it.
- 02
Add authoritative sources first, then supporting or dissenting material with clear titles.
- 03
Check imported content, dates, rights, and sync behavior before asking questions.
- 04
Use source labels and select only the relevant sources for narrower questions.
- 05
Record a source owner and review date for notebooks that will be reused or shared.
Working standard
What good use looks like.
- One notebook should have one coherent purpose.
- Do not upload material you lack rights to use.
- Remove stale or inaccessible sources.
NotebookLM is grounded in the sources you provide, but generated interpretation can still be wrong. Imported and shared sources can expose underlying material to collaborators; review rights and sharing permissions carefully.
