You type what your business does, and a hosted site appears with a layout, placeholder copy, stock images, and a form. Yes, these work. They produce a real, live website in minutes, and for some purposes that is the whole requirement.
The second is AI-assisted development: a developer or a technically confident founder using Claude, Cursor, Copilot or similar to write the code for a custom site. Yes, this works too, and far more powerfully, but it is a person building a website faster, not AI building one. The difference matters more than the marketing admits.
What AI builders genuinely do well
They solve the blank-page problem. Most people who need a simple site do not know where to start, and a builder that produces a reasonable structure and reasonable copy from three sentences gets them past that in the time it takes to make coffee. The layouts are competent because they are drawn from templates that already work. Hosting, SSL, and mobile responsiveness are handled. For a sole trader, a side project, an event, or a placeholder while something better is built, this is genuinely enough.
Where they stop
The copy is generic. The builder does not know your customers, your prices, or what makes you different, so it writes the average website for your category. That average is exactly what a visitor scrolls past. A site's homepage headline is the highest-value sentence on it, and it is the one the AI is worst placed to write.
The design is a template with your colours. It looks like every other site made by the same tool, because it is. That is fine for a plumber. It is a problem for anyone whose site has to signal that they are not interchangeable.
The details are unchecked. Forms that go nowhere, alt text that says "image", a contact page with a placeholder phone number, headings in the wrong order. These are all fixable, and the builder will not tell you they are there.
You are renting. AI builders live on their platform. Exporting the site to host elsewhere ranges from awkward to impossible, and the monthly fee continues for as long as the site exists.
What AI-assisted development does
In the hands of someone who can read the output, AI coding tools are the largest productivity change to web development in a decade. A developer can now scaffold a site, write components, generate the tedious parts, and fix bugs at a pace that was not available two years ago. We use them daily.
What they do not remove is the judgement. Someone still has to decide what the site is for, what the pages say, how the design reflects the brand, what the performance budget is, what happens when the form fails, and whether the thing that was generated is actually correct. AI output is confident whether it is right or wrong, and vibe coding a site into existence without reading the code produces exactly the kind of site that looks finished and breaks on the first real visitor.
The reasonable summary: AI has made a good developer perhaps twice as productive and has not made a non-developer into one. It has, however, made the gap between a builder site and a custom site cheaper to cross, which changes who should choose which.
Who should use what

People asking whether AI can build a website are usually asking whether they can avoid paying for one. The honest answer is that they can avoid paying for the building, which was already the cheap part, and cannot avoid paying, in money or their own time, for the thinking: what the site says, to whom, and why anyone should care. AI has made that trade-off sharper, not removed it.
