In short
Choose priority services, record the baseline, improve the pages that support those services, and evaluate search visits and AI-answer observations separately.
Start with one commercial objective
Choose the service or product that needs more qualified enquiries. Write down the audience, geography, buying questions and conversion action. A local service business and an international software studio should not share an unexamined keyword list. For terminology, read our GEO vs SEO comparison.
Record the baseline before editing
Export Search Console performance by page and query for a defined period. Note country, device and whether a query contains the brand name. Check index coverage for the priority pages and verify that a successful enquiry is measured separately from a button click.
Create a small, repeatable list of customer questions for an AI-answer review. Record the engine, locale, date, cited URLs and whether the answer describes the business correctly. Preserve the actual answer rather than assigning a score that hides the evidence.
Give each buyer question a destination
Map a service query to its service page, a project-evidence query to a case study, and a research question to an article when a separate article is useful. If two pages answer the same question, compare their query histories and links before merging. Similar words alone do not prove cannibalization.
For example, a web-development page should explain scope and ownership, then link to a project showing the implementation. Our Rent a Car Mars case study explains a shared booking database and server-rendered fleet pages. Those are inspectable project details; they should not be presented as measured revenue growth without supporting data.
Ship a focused batch
Fix crawl errors and conflicting canonical signals first. Improve the service explanation, add relevant evidence and place contextual links where readers need a next step. Keep a dated change log with the page, change, hypothesis and measurement window.
Check Google's guidance for AI search features before adding technical work. Special AI schema or a new machine-readable text file is not a prerequisite for those features.
Review observations without claiming causation
After search engines have had time to recrawl, compare equivalent periods and note seasonality, campaigns and other changes. Track relevant impressions, organic enquiries and conversion rates alongside technical checks. A ranking movement after an edit does not by itself establish that the edit caused it.
Repeat the AI question set and distinguish citations from mentions and referral sessions. Keep the sample conditions visible. Use the results to identify missing facts or inaccurate descriptions, not to promise placement.
Decide the next batch
Expand the pages that show relevant demand and improve weak pages with a clear business purpose. Retire or consolidate content based on usefulness and evidence, preserving valuable URLs where possible. If the main uncertainty is indexation or site architecture, start with an SEO audit.
