Does ChatGPT Use Bing for Search?

For most of its history, when ChatGPT looked something up it looked in Bing. That single fact changed who should care about Bing, and it is still only part of the picture.

Does ChatGPT Use Bing for Search? — Troiana insight cover

In short

Largely yes. ChatGPT's browsing and search features have been built on Microsoft Bing's search index under the OpenAI–Microsoft partnership, supplemented by OpenAI's own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and its own retrieval systems. So being indexed and ranking well in Bing affects whether ChatGPT can find and cite a page. Perplexity runs its own index with Bing and Google as inputs, Gemini uses Google, and Claude uses its own web search. Sites that want AI visibility should register with Bing Webmaster Tools and allow the AI crawlers.

How ChatGPT finds things on the web

A language model on its own knows only what was in its training data, which has a cutoff. To answer questions about anything current, or to cite sources, ChatGPT has to retrieve from the live web. Since browsing was introduced in 2023 and ChatGPT search launched in late 2024, that retrieval has relied on a search index to find candidate pages, then fetched and read them.

The index has been Microsoft Bing's. OpenAI's partnership with Microsoft gave it access to Bing's search API, and OpenAI has described its search feature as using a combination of search technology including Bing alongside its own models and systems. OpenAI also operates its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, which fetches pages for search results, and a separate one, GPTBot, which gathers training data. The two have different robots.txt names and can be permitted or blocked independently.

So the honest description in 2026: Bing is a major input to what ChatGPT can find, and OpenAI's own crawling and ranking sit on top of it. A page absent from Bing is at a real disadvantage; a page in Bing is findable but not guaranteed to be chosen.

Why this matters

For two decades, optimising for search meant optimising for Google, and Bing was an afterthought with a few percent of queries. ChatGPT's retrieval reversed that for one channel: the pages ChatGPT can cite are, to a large degree, the pages Bing has indexed and ranks well. A site that has never verified itself in Bing Webmaster Tools, has no sitemap submitted there, or is poorly ranked in Bing for its topics is less visible in one of the largest AI assistants regardless of its Google performance.

Bing's index is smaller than Google's and its ranking differs. It weights exact-match phrasing and on-page signals somewhat more, indexes new pages less aggressively, and supports IndexNow for instant notification of changes. Small sites that rank well in Google sometimes find they are barely present in Bing simply because nobody asked Bing to look.

What the other assistants use

Perplexity maintains its own index and crawler, PerplexityBot, and has drawn on Bing and other search APIs as inputs; it cites sources prominently and tends to favour recent, well-structured pages.

Google Gemini and AI Overviews use Google's index. For these, ordinary Google SEO applies; there is no separate index to be in.

Claude has its own web search capability and fetches pages in real time when it needs current information; it respects robots.txt rules for ClaudeBot and its search user agents.

Microsoft Copilot is Bing directly.

Each system fetches pages at answer time, reads what is in the HTML, and chooses what to cite. None of them execute JavaScript reliably, which is why server-rendered content matters more for AI visibility than for Google alone.

The practical steps

  1. Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit the sitemap. This is the single largest gap on most sites and takes fifteen minutes. Bing can import a verified Search Console property directly.
  2. Enable IndexNow so Bing, and the other engines that support it, learn about new and changed pages immediately.
  3. Check the robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Bingbot. Blocking GPTBot to opt out of training is a legitimate choice; blocking OAI-SearchBot removes the site from ChatGPT's search results, which is a different decision. Our note on whether to block AI crawlers separates the two.
  4. Check Bing rankings for the queries that matter. If they lag Google's, look at Bing's more literal matching: clear titles, headings that state the topic, and the phrasing people use.
  5. Put the answer in the HTML, first paragraph, under a heading that matches the question. Assistants quote the passage that answers directly, and they read the source, not the rendered page.
  6. Measure it. Referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and copilot.microsoft.com appear in analytics, and tracking AI referral traffic shows which assistants are sending anyone.

What this does not mean

It does not mean Bing SEO replaces Google SEO. Google still handles most searches, powers Gemini and AI Overviews, and drives more traffic than every assistant combined. It means Bing is no longer optional for a site that wants to be cited by ChatGPT, and that the same page quality that earns citations from one assistant tends to earn them from all, because they are all looking for the clearest, most authoritative answer their index can find.

If you would like to see how a site currently appears across Bing, Google and the main assistants, book a call; the gaps are usually quick to close.

Common questions

Does ChatGPT search use Google?

No. ChatGPT's browsing and search have been built on Microsoft Bing's index under the OpenAI–Microsoft partnership, supplemented by OpenAI's own crawler and retrieval systems. Google's index powers Gemini and Google's own AI Overviews, not ChatGPT.

How do I get my website to show up in ChatGPT?

Make sure it is indexed and ranks well in Bing by verifying it in Bing Webmaster Tools and submitting a sitemap; allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt; put clear, direct answers in the HTML under headings that match the questions people ask; and build the authority signals that make a page worth citing. Then check analytics for referrals from chatgpt.com.

What is the difference between GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot?

GPTBot is OpenAI's crawler for collecting training data; OAI-SearchBot fetches pages to include in ChatGPT's search results and citations. They use different robots.txt names, so a site can opt out of training while remaining visible in search, or the reverse. Blocking OAI-SearchBot removes the site from ChatGPT's search answers.

Does Perplexity use Bing?

Perplexity runs its own index and crawler, PerplexityBot, and has used Bing and other search APIs as inputs to find candidate pages. It then fetches and reads the pages itself and cites them prominently. Being in Bing helps; being clearly structured and authoritative decides whether it is cited.

Is Bing SEO worth doing in 2026?

Yes, for one specific reason: Bing's index feeds ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, so a site that is weak or absent in Bing is less visible in those assistants regardless of its Google rankings. Verifying in Bing Webmaster Tools, submitting a sitemap and enabling IndexNow takes an afternoon and closes most of the gap.
